Tiya Ising's Menu: Filipino Food + Puerto Princesa History

Collecting old photographs to be exhibited in a restaurant has never been an easy job especially when the studios that own the needed photos have closed down already.

However, Katchay Austria, manager at Tiya Ising's Filipino Restaurant in Puerto Princesa, Palawan patiently went from one door to another for this exciting project of gathering old photos of her hometown.

She later found herself victoriously bringing home the black and white photos she craved for. Some were from the defunct Amar Studio.

Seriously, I asked Katchay if she paid an amount for the precious archives. She said all photos were given for free.

Now, the photos she collected are displayed on the walls of Tiya Ising's Filipino Restaurant. Before you order food from this cozy restaurant, you get the chance to experience the old Puerto Princesa through the photos.

In November 2015, the restaurant opened to serve Filipino comfort food. It can cater to 35 (buffet style) to 40 (sitting) persons.

An interesting part of the restaurant is how it got the name. It was actually named after the manager's grand auntie.

When asked about the best seller, Katchay shared it is their version of Kare-kare which is at P250.00 for two to three persons. I tried it, and I could not find any point to disagree why the crowd orders this comfort food.

Bangus, on the other hand, is at P385 for four person. In the average, a P500 bill can feed five hungry stomachs.

I also tried sinampalukang luya which was undeniably my second favorite. The combination of sampalok and luya is really heavenly to the taste buds.

During our visit, we had the opportunity to taste almost everything on the menu. We also had a small talk with Katchay. A door on one side of the restaurant leads you to Lola Itang's which serves bed and breakfast to travelers in Palawan.
